Volunteer Opportunity: Meals From the Heartland, December 9

What are you doing Friday, December 9? If you have a few hours free that afternoon, we invite you to join Slow Food Des Moines from 1:00 – 3:00 pm, as we work a volunteer shift at Meals From the Heartland.

Meals From the Heartland coordinates volunteers who package meals for delivery to malnourished people in Iowa, across the United States and around the world.

meals_photo2The inspiration for the Meals from the Heartland effort began with a 2007 food-packaging event held by a church in West Des Moines, Iowa. The success of that event encouraged leaders to organize a community-wide food-packaging event that would involve more volunteers to feed hungry children and families, an event resulting in 12,000 volunteers who packaged more than 4 million meals in a week’s time at our first Annual Hunger Fight.

The success of that first community-wide event led to the development of a year-round meal packaging effort. Thousands of volunteers now come together to package millions of meals year-round.

See you there? If you’re interested in joining us, please get in touch with Slow Food Des Moines board chair Kari [info@slowfooddesmoines.com ]. She’ll get you signed up for our volunteer day, and send you the details (where to go, what to expect, etc).

More information about Meals From the Heartland is available at their website; for any updates or changes about the December 9 Slow Food Des Moines volunteer day, follow the Facebook event page.
