Volunteer with us, Monday, April 17, as we feed the youth for the day at the Iowa Homeless Youth Center (IHYC) in downtown Des Moines.
Slow Food Des Moines is taking over IHYC’s kitchen at 612 Locust Street for the day, from 8 am – 6:30 pm.
Volunteers are needed for three 2-1/2 to 3-hour time slots:
- 3 people Morning 7:30am – 10am
- 3 people Lunch 11:30am – 2pm
- 3 people Dinner 3pm – 6:30pm
Whom are we serving? Iowa Homeless Youth Centers (IHYC) works to eliminate homelessness among children, youth and young mothers in Polk County with a variety of programs and facilities that teach homeless youth, ages 16-25, to live independently and become self-sufficient.
IHYC is often a last resort for older runaway and homeless youth who have exhausted community resources, family and friends.
The Youth Opportunity Center, where we will be volunteering, is the newest facility for IHYC, located at 612 Locust Street in Downtown Des Moines. The center includes: a drop-in center, commercial kitchen with daily meal program, laundry and shower facilities, art studio, computer lab, therapy and counseling rooms, and 9 emergency beds for transition-age youth.

A little more info for the volunteers: We will create a menu for the day and prepare it. The breakfast crew will help prep for lunch, and the lunchtime volunteers will help get ready for dinner.
