Once again, Slow Food Des Moines is taking over IHYC’s kitchen for the day, from 8 am – 6:30 pm.
Several volunteers are needed at 612 Locust Street for each of the three 2-1/2 to 3-hour time slots:
3 people Morning 7:30am – 10am
3 people Lunch 11:30am – 2pm
3 people Dinner 3pm – 6:30pm
Whom are we serving? Iowa Homeless Youth Centers (IHYC) works to eliminate homelessness among children, youth and young mothers in Polk County with a variety of programs and facilities that teach homeless youth, ages 16-25, to live independently and become self-sufficient.
IHYC is often a last resort for older runaway and homeless youth who have exhausted community resources, family and friends.
The Youth Opportunity Center, where we will be volunteering, is the newest facility for IHYC, located at 612 Locust Street in Downtown Des Moines. The center includes: a drop-in center, commercial kitchen with daily meal program, laundry and shower facilities, art studio, computer lab, therapy and counseling rooms, and 9 emergency beds for transition-age youth.
IHYC is also a recent recipient of the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines Leadership Grant! The sizeable grant will support the organization’s Rooftop Gardens project: IHYC are converting the rooftop of 612 Locust St into a produce garden. The produce will be sold to local markets to provide the residents of the Iowa Homeless Youth Center with a livable wage and work experience.
Can you help? Let us know by this weekend (July 9). Reply via email to firstname.lastname@example.org . Please include your name and your email address, and phone number for contact. Tell us your preference for first and second choice time slot. We will get back to volunteers with all the details next week!
For updates and more information on the Kitchen Takeover, please follow the Facebook event page.
A little more info for the volunteers: We will create a menu for the day, and prepare it. The breakfast crew will help prep for lunch, and the lunchtime volunteers will help get ready for dinner.
Thanks so much for helping us make our July “Kitchen Takeover” a big success!
